Past art projects & installations

From 2002 to 2008, I had the privilege of working at Straightline Designs Inc. under the late visionary, Judson Beaumont. As a project manager and artist, I led a diverse team and various creative projects. These included sculptural furniture, public installations, and interactive play areas. Notable among these were the playful environments of the Disney Wonder Cruise Ship, a two-story Bonsai Tree at Cotsen’s Children’s Library at Princeton University, and the whimsical Garden Maze at YVR. This diversity of projects allowed me to showcase my versatility and adaptability in the art world.

Furthermore, my contributions to the Art in the City initiatives with the BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities were not just about creating art but about enriching the community. I crafted unique 7.5-foot sculptures such as the Orca Whale, Spirit Bear, and Eagle. I joined as an artist for the Terracotta Warrior series, which featured the imaginative piece, The Last Empress. Additionally, my work with renowned writer and artist, Douglas Coupland, on projects like 'Death Star,' ‘Super City,’ oversized Tinker Toys and Lego, 'Fifty Books I Have Read More Than Once' at SFU's Teck Gallery, and visual art pieces for the ‘Souvenir of Canada 2’ book expanded my artistic repertoire. These experiences enriched my artistic journey, blending creativity with practical execution, and continue to inspire my work today.

The Last Empress

In 2011, I was invited to participate in the BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities' final Art in the City initiative, creating "The Last Empress" for the Terracotta Warrior project. This piece was manipulated from the original likeness of a Terracotta Warrior to the Dowager Empress Cixi. This piece was inspired by a powerful and complex figure in Chinese history. Known for her influence during the late Qing Dynasty, Cixi's legacy is both celebrated and debated, which added layers of meaning to my work. The portrayal sparked conversation within the Chinese community, highlighting the nuanced views on her reign and legacy. This project allowed me to explore the intersections of art, history, and cultural dialogue, creating a visually striking and thought-provoking piece.

Art in the City

From 2003, over the next decade, the Art in the City fundraiser for the BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities became a highlight in Vancouver. I was integral to the team (at Straightline Designs Inc.) that designed and built the original 7.5-foot sculptures of the Orcas, Spirit Bears, and Eagles. These originals were moulded and reproduced, distributed to local artists for their unique designs, displayed throughout Vancouver, and auctioned to raise funds. I helped craft the original sculptures and contributed to the final designs, including Orca Presley, Whale Tales, Darth Bear, Barrister Bear, Robo Bear, Bat Bear, and Beartuzzi, in collaboration with the late Judson Beaumont.

Garden Maze

The Garden Maze is one of a few installations at YVR, a whimsical play structure that captivates children's imaginations. This was one of the first projects I managed and helped create at Straightline Designs Inc. Crafted from wood, Bondo, stain and paint, this enchanting maze features pathways leading to a central gazebo. Inside, visitors can gaze up to discover an intricate flight path image on the underside of the gazebo roof, blending playful exploration with an educational element. This project seamlessly combines artistry and functionality, providing young travellers with a delightful and interactive experience.

In the Cotsen Children's Library at Princeton University, I helped finish and install the enchanting Bookscape gallery. My work involved the intricate finishing of the Bonsai Tree and the staining and painting of all the solid wood trims of the whimsical designs by the late Judson Beaumont. These elements brought warmth and character to the space, creating an inviting and magical environment for young readers to explore and enjoy.
